Welcome to the Tarchini lab. We investigate how sensory cells in the inner ear acquire the ability to detect sound, gravity or head movements. We are particularly interested in understanding how each cell grows and organizes unique protrusions that function together as motion detectors, and how neighboring cells achieve matching directional placement of this sensory compartment. Our work adds to the comprehension and development of potential treatment for hereditary hearing loss, and informs emerging therapies aimed at regenerating fully functional hair cells following injury or disease.
